MAKAI flight w 4 Archives, 1 Lyse-n-go

Feb 2-4, 2016

Repeat of Dec flight.  Here are notes from Yanwu's summary:

(Note: when reaching each target depth (peak-chl or pre-set), we give Makai 10 minutes to damp down depth undulation.)

Sample#1 (lyse&go sample. At chl peak):
Makai descended from surface, found the chl peak at 8.7m. On the ensuing ascent, Makai held depth at 8.7m, and triggered sample#1.
Took 63 minutes to complete.  Then Makai surfaced to "report to shore".

Sample#2 (archive sample. At chl peak):
Makai descended from surface, found the chl peak at 12.7m. On the ensuing ascent, Makai held depth at 12.3m, and triggered sample#2. (Note: the water column was quite mixed vertically. The chl values at 8m and 12m were very close. Makai was doing her best to pick the relatively weak peak.)  Took 41 minutes to complete.

Sample#3 (archive sample. At reacquired chl peak):
In order to reacquire the chl peak (considering the peak-chl layer may have moved up or down), Makai intentionally wiggled up and down (up first, then down, and then up). On the "down", it found the chl peak at 13.2m. On the ensuing "up", Makai held depth at 13.0m, and triggered sample#3.  Took 40 minutes to complete.

Sample#4 (archive sample. At pre-set 27m. Control sample.):
Makai dove to the pre-set 27m depth, and triggered sample#4.  Took 39 minutes to complete.

Sample#5 (archive sample. At pre-set 27m. Control sample.):
Makai stayed at the pre-set 27m depth, and triggered sample#5.  Took 38 minutes to complete.

Del Mar--ESP-Waldo

May 17, 2016

Used M/V Merlin (Walt Crampton), with MBARI surface mooring.  Divers from SCRIPPS.  Deployed with CTD about 400 yds from Del Mar mooring (SE of their mooring). Used new anchor line, #1 shockle, and 35m EM cable.

Ship coordinates when we dropped it:  32' 55.603N  117' 18.895W
Melo coordinates (IMEI: 300034012090780):  32.92633 -117.31491

Water depth 100m.  Divers reported master link at 22.8m, can top at 16.76m.  CTD reading ~18m.

Initial mission is to take a sample two hours after sunrise, every weekday.

Recovered ESP-Waldo.  used M/V Merlin with Scripps divers.  Drove home with 5'x9' trailer w/ramp using MBARI van #4.

After two-day wait for weather to settle, deployed ESP MOE at M0.  No mission loaded, as they wanted to manually fire each archive and have more control over when they would manually collect samples.

Shana Rae used, with Charles Bock & Mike Conway diving.  15.6m EM cable with Shockle #2.  CTD is around 5.65m deep.

Oct 7, lost comms to Moe.  Modem and Cell provider check out.  Electrical signal up/down EM cable check out.  Oct 11 bring out computer to see if we can talk to can.  no luck.

 Got Shana Rae and divers (Eric + George) at the last minute.  Weather beautiful. Flat.  Recovered instrument on deck, and tried three ways to tunnel in to talk to host.  No luck.  Brought instrument home and could not communicate with host after uncanning.  Scott traded carrier board with one in Brent's office and it worked.  Moe carrier board did not work on another Sleepy.  Work continues to discover why/ what went wrong on carrier board.

 Got Shana Rae and divers (Jeff S and Paul C.).  Deployment went very smoothly.  difficult cell phone reception at site.  Got confirmation of depth (6.7m) and started home.  After about 15 minutes got call from Brent that carousel was jammed and would not turn.  Suggested recover.  We returned and recovered and brought everything home.  inspection showed that a carousel rod had unscrewed itself,fallen, and jammed against the elevator, freezing the carousel.  Weather is turning more mercurial; will try to redeploy on Wed, Nov 2.

Nov 2, 2016  

Got Shana Rae and divers (Jeff S and Mike C).  Deployment went smoothly, although had to wait for fueling of WF on dock.  Left 11:30am, returned ~3pm.  Depth 6.5m.  This will be a 2-week run.

Nov 17, 2016

Textbook recovery of ESP-Moe, ending the Moran deployment.  Used Shana Rae w/ divers, George & Kim R.  Left dock at 8:20am, returned ~11:00.  Some swell and coolish/cold.

3G ESP in Monterey Bay

Dec 14-19, 2016

Perform 5-cartridge depth/pressure testing in MB.  Launched Makai with Honu; mission was to sample at chl max, 50m, 100m, 200m, and 300m.  Sent vehicle up off Davenport to find deep enough (but not too deep) water for tests.

Results:

Dec 15

First cartridge fired ~8am at chl max (~14m) with avg chl 1.9ul/l.  Took 45 minutes to sample 1L.

Second cartridge (50m) fired (~3:20pm) and took 57min.

Third cartridge (100m) fired (~6:36pm) and took 35min.

Dec 16

 Difficult keeping on station, but started 200m cartridge ~8:27pm.  Vehicle timeout caused vehicle to cut power to ESP after 60min, before ESP was finished sampling.

Dec 17

Difficulty finding 300m water within the vehicle timeouts.  Vehicle dropped weight on a return to surface, as it thought it was taking too long.   Also, Rowe (ADCP) caused a computer re-set just before sampling was to commence.  Difficult day....

Dec 18

Turned off ADCP.  In slightly deeper water and successfully fired off sample.  Vehicle recovered next day.

Post-recovery summary by Chris Preston:

Upon startup in the lab, the PV could not reach home and pinned the SC.  It did not properly home. This likely occurred during the sampling of the 300m sample.  Cartridge summary to follow:[11:37] Cartridges run at 14m, 50m and 100m all sampled and preserved correctly.  No indication of bubbles upon inspection.  For these cartridges ran archiveEvac to clear out RNAlater in puck.

Cartridge run at 200m timed out before sampling completed.  Did not get command from Makai to process the sample, thus it was not fixed.  Back in the lab, ran archiveEvacAUV (full RNAlater fix procedure).  No indication of bubbles introduced during sampling.

Cartridge run at 300m sampled for 15min correctly, Honu received commands from Makai to process.  ESPhonu failed to actuate the PV and thus the sample was not preserved.  Ran archiveEvacAUV.  No indication of bubbles introduced during sampling.  My best guess is that the carousel wasn't aligned properly and that the PV managed to get jammed upon actuation. This is the state that the instrument was in when it was brought to the lab.

So, Makai-ESPhonu sampled at all depths... 3/5 samples preserved.
